Hold and protect your smile
After the active phase of orthodontic treatment, where we move and align your teeth, you start the next important phase, retention. Wearing retainers at the end of treatment is important as without them, your teeth will likely move back towards their original positions. This is because the ligaments holding your teeth to your jaw have been stretched and much like a piece of elastic, will try and move your teeth once your braces have been removed. To stop this from happening, we encourage all patients to wear retainers.
If you play contact sports and want to protect your teeth during or after orthodontic treatment, we can also provide you with a comfortable custom made mouthguard. The mouthguard will help ensure any impact around your jaw will be less likely to cause damage to your teeth or braces. Your mouthguard should be regularly inspected and replaced if there are any signs of wear or if it no longer fits you.
“Wearing retainers has become a habit now. It’s been a few years since I finished treatment and my retainers are still doing their job keeping my teeth straight…”.
