Your questions answered
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the correction of teeth which are wrongly placed. Examples of this are irregular, crossed or crowded teeth that protrude (buck teeth).
Why is orthodontics necessary?
For several reasons:
- To give a good appearance and a nice smile
- Because straight teeth are easier to keep clean
- To provide a proper bite between upper and lower teeth
- The risk of injury to protruding teeth is reduced
What is the best age to start treatment?
Most orthodontic treatment begins between the age of 11 and 13, depending on how quickly the permanent teeth come through. Sometimes there may be indications for earlier treatment.
Will teeth need to be removed?
Sometimes it is necessary for a small number of teeth to be removed to make space for crowded teeth elsewhere.
How long does treatment take?
This depends on how far the teeth need to be moved as well as the co-operation of the brace wearer. Most orthodontic treatments can be completed within 2 years and some simpler ones in considerably less time.
How many visits to the practice are required?
It is usually necessary to adjust the orthodontic appliance at 4-6 week intervals. Your orthodontist will advise how often your particular appliance will need adjustment.
Will it hurt?
All appliances may feel strange to begin with and can cause some irritation and discomfort. If problems do persist the orthodontist may be able to carry out some adjustments to help. Teeth are usually uncomfortable shortly after adjustments but this will quickly settle.
How successful will it be?
Success depends on a partnership between the skills of the orthodontist, with the enthusiasm and help of the patient and parents. It is important to attend appointments and carry out any instructions given by the orthodontist.
Do appliances damage the teeth?
Not if looked after properly. Good cleaning and care with the appliances is essential for successful treatment as are regular adjustments by the orthodontist.
